Rare Books Review: Hot Items for Collectors
There is something special about an old book. As you run your fingers across the cover and flip through the antique pages, you are transported to a different time and place. You are holding a piece of history, a piece of another era. If this scenario stirs your passion, you are definitely a bibliophile, or book lover. In this rare books review, you'll learn more about the pursuit of collecting rare and valuable books.
Some people collect books for pleasure. Others look for investment pieces that will gain value over the years. Then there are those that do both. Regardless of why you are collecting books, you will need to know which books are valuable and which are not. Let's take a look at some of the most expensive and rare books in the world. First on our list is a book known as the bibliophiles Holy Grail -- the Gutenberg Bible of 1456. This book was the first ever to be printed. It's estimated value? Priceless. However, a first edition Bible would pull in around $25 million if you were lucky enough to get your hands on it.
Another example of a very valuable book collection that gained in value is the first edition of the Collected Works of Shakespeare. Purchased by Microsoft founder Bill Gates for $30 million 25 years ago, this book has skyrockted in value and is now worth $100 million. You're probably thinking the same thing as I am. That's great for Bill Gates, but what about the rest of the book collectors in the world?
There are plenty of opportunities for collecting all kinds of rare and valuable tomes. Maybe you enjoy collecting old literature. Or maybe your thing is hoarding vintage genre fiction. Some collectors prefer non-fiction. You can collect by genre, author, or even age. You can specialize in one area or collect many different kinds of books. It's totally up to you. Many collectors look for first editions of whatever type of books they collect, which are substantially more valuable than reprints.
If you need a more extensive rare books review, there are many instructional titles devoted to book collecting. One great title that can get you started is Book Finds, 3rd Edition: How to Find, Buy, and Sell Used and Rare Books by Ian C. Ellis. Another title that you may want to take with you when hunting for books is Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions by Bill McBride. Whether you're hunting through the shelves at a local shop or browsing online, this pocket guide can help you identify valuable titles.
